July 21, 2001-- Climbed the highest mountain in the US outside of Alaska.

We camped at Lone Pine campground, about 6 miles from the trailhead. This was Niranjan's first time camping ever.
This was our view of Mount Whitney from out campsite. Mount Whitney is the tallest peak under the end of the bottom branch of the tree.
This is a map of the main Mount Whitney trail which we took up to the summit. The trail is about 11 miles each way and rises over 6000 feet in elevation.
We began our hike very early (4:30am). This is a view looking down a Lone Pine Lake as the sun began to rise.
The lake next to Trail Camp.
This was a friendly marmot we met on the hike up. I didn't have a telephoto lens, so you can see by how close these pictures are how unafraid of people he was. He was apparently used to generous (or sloppy) hikers, but he didn't get any food from us.
The flowers were just past their peak when we did the hike, but there were still a number of them in bloom.
View of Mount Whitney from the south. Mount Whitney is the tall peak on the right.
We all made it! 14,496.88 ft.!
A view from the top. This view is looking back toward Lone Pine and the direction from which we hiked up.
Can you guess what Niranjan is doing here?
